Event: Squash Central NY

"If you’re one of the estimated 30,000 passengers who travel to and from Grand Central Station in NYC, or one of the overwhelming half a million people who pass through the terminal each day, chances are the only thing you’re focused on is catching the right train to take you to your destination. Recently, the Bear Sterns Tournament of Champions, the largest professional squash event in North America, was set up in one of the halls of Grand Central. The week-long event attracted 64 players and 4,500 spectators.
The glass-enclosed court was surrounded on three sides with bleachers for paying fans, and a VIP lounge was set up on the other side of the hall. And although the train schedule most certainly stayed on track, we wonder how many of the passengers got distracted walking past the pop-up court, and missed their trains."

Event: In Living the True Gods Screening at the Evil Monito Studio

"Stones Throw's first DVD, Stones Throw 101 served as a primer course for those unfamiliar with the label's video releases, and included one of indie hip-hop's greatest visual moments, the animated Madvillain "All Caps" video. Directors of Stones Throw 101 videos have gone on to great heights, working for the likes of Nas, Young Buck, Ludacris and alongside visionaries like Michel Gondry.

For the label's follow up, the West Coast mavericks have assembled a more advanced curriculum, In Living The True Gods - a line borrowed from Madvillain’s "Accordion,” seen for the first time on this collection.

From the surrealist Quasimoto "Bullyshit" animated video to the late J Dilla's last appearance on film in MED's "Push" to the neo-noir animated nightmare of Madvillain's "Monkey Suite," this anthology demonstrates Stones Throw's widening, and never retiring, creative base. A series of bonus features range from an exclusive J Dilla interview from 2003 to a mini-documentary Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf, shot in session on VHS in 1992." -

Art: Hannes Broecker "Drink Away The Art"

"Forget about wandering through an art gallery and wondering if you’re the only one who has no idea what anything means. Hannes Broecker has brilliantly invited the cultural elite to grab a glass at an exhibition in Dresden, Germany, and drink away the art. Regardless of what we do or do not understand about art, we can all agree, it stimulates our senses. Broecker has aroused our sense of taste (not to mention eliminated the need of elbowing our way to the bar) by hanging flat, glass containers with a variety of cocktails in the exhibition space. As the night progressed, the levels of the multi-coloured infusions diminished. By the end of the event, the art, itself, ran dry, and empty drinking glasses were returned to where they were originally placed." -By Andrew J Wiener

Toys: Kathie Olivas: Bittersweet 2/29/08

"Kathie Olivas will bring her Misery Children to Gallery 1988 San Francisco for the opening of her Bittersweet show opening on Friday, February 29th, 2008 (7-10 PM). Extremely talented and prolific, Kathie's created an impressive body of work for this solo including paintings, custom vinyl figures, and jaw-dropping original resin sculptures. Her paintings continue to impress as she adds more emotional complexity to her portrayals of children. On the 3D front, Kathie's known for her outstanding vinyl toy customs, but her new wholly original resin sculptures are pardon the cliche -- 'next level'. Several of the resin sculptures are still available -- got get 'em. Be sure to check out the online preview and if you're in the Bay Area go out to the opening and enjoy. Click through for a few more sweet resin sculptures."
