"The Revolution Will Be Fabulous"

Peter Gronquist

A Weapons of Mass Designer Show
opening Saturday, May 3rd, 2008
Gallery 1988 Los Angeles is proud to present Peter Gronquist's special engagement art exhibit, "The Revolution Will Be Fabulous", which will run from Saturday, May 3rd until May 16th, 2008.
The opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 from 7-10 PM, and the artist will be in attendance.
Although Peter Gronquist is a well-known painter (and part of the recent Vivisect Playset Toy Series) "The Revolution Will Be Fabulous" will feature only Gronquist's signature weapon replicas that he slyly customizes with gold plating and designer logo prints, re-defining an object with such hazardous possibilities, as something of ridiculous fashion and glamour. These are actual guns that he's able to make into his own artistic statement. By juxtaposing these firearms with the language of mass consumption and consumerism (as well as the quintessential aspects of "bling"), Gronquist challenges gangster/crime culture, as well as the second amendment, giving them a whole new sense of glamorization (and satire).

Onitsuka Vending Machine

From today, you can get your kicks from the world's first ever trainer vending machine, created by Japanese sports fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger. It will be as easy as getting hold of a chocolate bar or a can of coke, as well as being the most convenient way to ensure your feet look good at all times. The latest advance in sneaker shopping comes after months of arduous design work by the Onitsuka Tiger team. The machine is made up of over 100 bespoke parts and can vend 24 pairs of trainers at any one time, in any of 6 sizes.

The trainer vending machine will be stationed just off Carnaby Street for three days only at the Onitsuka Tiger store between Monday 14th - Wednesday 16th April and all trainers from the vending machine will begiven away- so you don't need to put your hand in your pocket at all. After making a star appearance in London, the vending machine will then embark on a national tour throughout 2008, starting in Manchester. -SneakerFreaker.

i found waldo

Artist Melanie Coles recontextualizes childhood favorite- Where's Waldo- into the digital realm. Riffing off installation, site specific works by artists such as Christo, Coles created a giant Where's Waldo on an undisclosed rooftop- encouraging viewers to "find" him via the internet program Google Earth. The program allows users to view sattelite images of earth. What differentiates her work from similar atecedents, however, is that rather than photographic documentation, or even public visibility, her piece is viewable only through internet technology. -Sasha

Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present “Tastebuds,” the solo debut of mixed media artwork from Long Beach artist Ryan Milner. The online exhibit will run From May 3, 2008 to May 31, 2008, and the opening party will be held at Street Lab on May 3 from 7-10pm. Street Lab is located at 507 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802.

Milner displays the mastery of his craft though many different avenues and one familiar with his work would steadfastly agree. In his “Tastebuds” series, he explores a wide range of techniques and media; ranging from renderings in acrylic to watery, splashes of paint flung helter-skelter on wood panels. "I love to scrawl across the surface and just let the image develop,” says Milner, “line and gesture are the ultimate form of expression."

His lumpy, undulating faces act as a satirical blending of a cultural milieu. From the vagabonds that amble around the streets of Long Beach, to the suburbanites, to the whitecollar businessmen of corporate Los Angeles, each face is an actor in his own homemade movie, of which he is the writer, director, producer, and visionary.

The mixed media work displayed in the exhibit will provide a voice for Milner’s ideas, thoughts, predictions, emotions, and opinions. "We are all unique,” he says, “It’s the one thing we have in common."

ICarmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art presents Witnessed From Afar, a showcase of artwork by Andrew Pommier, Irina Troitskaya, Karen Preston, Ken Garduno, Mel Kadel, Michael Hsiung, and Parskid.

In an atmosphere of effervescent quietude, gorgeous misfits and delicate animals float across paper, cardboard, and wood – lost and lonely, but swelling with emotion and extraordinary grace. Evoking forgotten pains and philosophical yearnings, the artists contemplate the oddities of life and death with warmth and sincerity; yet always maintain their distance.
