Events. to visit

Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present “Tastebuds,” the solo debut of mixed media artwork from Long Beach artist Ryan Milner. The online exhibit will run From May 3, 2008 to May 31, 2008, and the opening party will be held at Street Lab on May 3 from 7-10pm. Street Lab is located at 507 E. Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802.

Milner displays the mastery of his craft though many different avenues and one familiar with his work would steadfastly agree. In his “Tastebuds” series, he explores a wide range of techniques and media; ranging from renderings in acrylic to watery, splashes of paint flung helter-skelter on wood panels. "I love to scrawl across the surface and just let the image develop,” says Milner, “line and gesture are the ultimate form of expression."

His lumpy, undulating faces act as a satirical blending of a cultural milieu. From the vagabonds that amble around the streets of Long Beach, to the suburbanites, to the whitecollar businessmen of corporate Los Angeles, each face is an actor in his own homemade movie, of which he is the writer, director, producer, and visionary.

The mixed media work displayed in the exhibit will provide a voice for Milner’s ideas, thoughts, predictions, emotions, and opinions. "We are all unique,” he says, “It’s the one thing we have in common."

ICarmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art presents Witnessed From Afar, a showcase of artwork by Andrew Pommier, Irina Troitskaya, Karen Preston, Ken Garduno, Mel Kadel, Michael Hsiung, and Parskid.

In an atmosphere of effervescent quietude, gorgeous misfits and delicate animals float across paper, cardboard, and wood – lost and lonely, but swelling with emotion and extraordinary grace. Evoking forgotten pains and philosophical yearnings, the artists contemplate the oddities of life and death with warmth and sincerity; yet always maintain their distance.
